Part of how she does it so masterfully is through an inverted setting known as the â€Å"flipped classroom,† a technique she implemented as she led the overhaul of Olin’s Management Communication course. Using the â€Å"flipped† model, undergraduate students in Professor Thomasâ€⠄¢ business communication class view pre-recorded lectures outside of class then spend class time engaged in discussions and exercises to apply what they’ve learned. One student from the course took to LinkedIn Pulse to share his recent experience inside Thomas’ flipped classroom. â€Å"A great deal of business communication skills can only be cultivated with actual experimentation. This applied learning helped me gain a greater appreciation for how the bulk of communication is conveyed with facial expressions, body language, and the tone of your voice. Learning is a fantastic fringe benefit. â€Å"If I weren’t a business school professor†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I would be dissatisfied with almost anything else. I have a long background in marketing and corporate communications; I would likely go back to that. Perhaps I’d cons ult, with a focus on helping veterans gain the communication skills they need to succeed in business. â€Å"One word that describes my first time teaching† ExhilaratingWhat do you enjoy most about teaching undergraduate business students? Helping them achieve their own goals. I love helping them find and maximize their strengths.What is the biggest challenge that comes with teaching undergraduate business students? Getting them outside their own worldview. We’re always told to â€Å"put yourself in someone else’s shoes† but that’s meaningless and impossible without deep self- and other-awareness. Undergraduates seldom have the age and experience needed to gain that awareness.   It’s difficult to convey the concept that my â€Å"right† could be your â€Å"wrong,† and, that we’re both correct. Communication is all about audience; success in this subject demands critical listening and an open mind. Both are hard to teach! What is the most impressive thing one of your undergraduate students has done? That’s really difficult, because I’ve had several students who started incredibly successful businesses or nonprofits during their off-hours. One of my classes was able to work on a client project for Coach. They pitched their concepts to the CEO, who ultimately implemented some of the students’ strategies. It’s a great feeling to see their work actually come to life for a major global brand.What is the least favorite thing one has done? My course uses live corporations and nonprofits to create experiential learning opportunities. The â€Å"clients† visit class several times throughout the semester to guide the students through the development of a communication strategy. During a first meeting, one of my students told an entrepreneur that his business was likely to fail because he’d â€Å"never buy the product.†   He obviously missed a critical class on other-awareness.What does a student need to do to get an A in your class? Show me some grit. Attend, engage, do the work, try. Grit and resourcefulness go a long way with me.â€Å"When it comes to grading, I think students would describe me as †¦Ã¢â‚¬  An advocate of â€Å"tough love.† If I issue a low grade, I’ll ask the student to rework it, as many times as needed, to earn that A. That shows me they’ve mastered the skill.â€Å"But I would describe myself as †¦Ã¢â‚¬  Blessed. Committed. Happy.What are your hobbies? I’m an extreme extrovert, and a whirlwind at work. So, my hobbies tend to help me decompress. I unplug. I run and read. My kids have big personalities, and days with them are the best comic relief imaginable.How did you spend your summer? Some travel to Asia, a Disney Cruise, plenty of time at the pool, and working.Favorite place to vacation: I’ve traveled much of the world, and I always come back to The American South. I love the end of the world!Favorite movie and/or television show: Italian cinema never fails to break my heart. Television – Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead. Favorite type of music and/or favorite artist: I love songs that tell stories, but all music is wonderful with the right speakers! I like everything from Jesse Cook to Florida Georgia Line. Bucket list item #1: No bucket list items! If there’s something you want to do before you die, do it now because you could die tomorrow.What professional achievement are you most proud of? My students! Seriously, every time a st udent tells me that they achieved their professional goals and that I helped even a little – that’s my moment.What is your most memorable moment as a professor? I have some great inside jokes with my students. I’d tell you, but you wouldn’t get it.Professor you most admire and why: Todd Milbourn, who teaches finance here at Olin, is amazing. He has a way of interacting with people that’s so down to earth and pragmatic, I’d love to bottle and sell it. If I had half his intellect, I could rule the world. Apparently, he just doesn’t want to.What are you currently researching and what is the most significant discovery youve made from it? I can’t sit still long enough to research, and that’s not my role at Olin. However, I’m fascinated with how technology affects the evolution of language. The medium evolves the language in many ways. For example, we’re watching the development of an entire language in emoji. Hi eroglyphics are back in style, and this will undeniably affect communication in business – where almost 80% of communications fail due to missing context. Businesses are however, acutely aware of the cost of communication, so I’m curious to see the continued evolution.Twitter handle: There’s enough noise in the world without my having a Twitter handle. I find myself distressed by humanity when I’m on social media. We need to stop sacrificing interactions to gain convenience. Make someone’s day by actually picking up the phone and asking about their status, rather than clicking â€Å"like.†   And for the love of God, don’t measure your worth by number of likes or shares.â€Å"If I had my way, the business school of the future would have much more of this†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Student-centered, experiential androgogy. There’s a YouTube video to explain almost concept or skill a student cares to master. In response, we need to determin e how we can create customized real-world experiences centered on cutting-edge research that the students can’t gain anywhere else.â€Å"And much less of this†   Lecture. There’s a pretty clear difference between lecturing and teaching. We need to stop â€Å"dumping information† and placing the onus of responsibility on the students to absorb it. Today’s student grew up in sound-bites, vivid imagery and ever-changing pop-culture references. Long lectures and static images are no longer effective. We need to create new ways of teaching that work for the student, not just for the professor.Looking ahead 10 years from now, describe what â€Å"success† would like for you:  If, in 10 years, I could look back on 10 years’ worth of successful, satisfied former students, I’d call that a success. Maybe Enkidu is purposely avoiding this discussion as to not excite Gilgamesh since he is already so fearless. This shows how Enkidu is uncertain of the strength and qualities of man and, like his gods, undermines and questions man’s abilities. Enkidu tries to explain how any man who faces the Humbaba will be overwhelmed by fear, which helps to highlight the fact that Enkidu considers mankind to be frail and coward (Mitchell, 93). Even though it is only mankind that Enkidu is skeptical about, he tries to convince Gilgamesh to forgo the quest in the following words: â€Å"Who among men or gods could defeat him? † (Mitchell, 93). This shows that Enkidu is extremely desperate about not going on the quest as he is sure of the overpowering qualities of the Humbaba. Enkidu seems to consider humans as inferior and helpless beings against the gods an d their will. There seems to contradictions in Enkidus description of the Humbaba when he says that the Humbaba has been put in the jungle to terrify men. He never at any point during the description of the beast mention that it will kill anyone but he very discretely emphasizes that it is so terrifying that its rivals are seized with fear when they confront it. Enkidu mentions that the Humbaba’s rivals will lose because fear will be their main hindrance. He is constantly ignoring how Gilgamesh is a gallant character and is not afraid of death or facing gods for what is right. Enkidu is ignoring the fact that it might be Gilgamesh’s bravery that might allow them to overpower and kill the Humbaba. Enkidu is constantly contradicting his statements. At one point in the conversation he says the beast is terrifying and no man stands a chance against him, but he doesn’t mention that Humbaba has killed anyone. Then Enkidu contradicts his statements when he says that Gilgamesh is no challenge to the creature. This means that Enkidu is saying that the beast will be able to overwhelm and kill Gilgamesh. It is clear that Enkidu has no solid stance to stop the brave and enthusiastic Gilgamesh from battling the creature. Enkidu does seem to prove his point as he again and again reminds that the Humbaba is the god, Enlil, so fighting him would mean clear opposition of the god.

Rock and roll (often written as rock roll or rock n roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States. The music we know as rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in the mid 1950s, even though a form of it had been on the horizon for at least a decade or so. A quarter of the American population moved during World War II, and that is what brought southern, rural, sacred and secular traditions into contact with urban-based music and its audiences. Rock and roll drew on many different styles. It derived most directly from the rhythm and blues music of the 1940s, which it developed from earlier blues, boogie-woogie, jazz and swing music. Great Expectations Charles Dickens Essay This tells us the city is in poverty. This is clever of Dickens as he doesnt actually tell us that London is in poverty but he still gets the point across. He also creates almost a refuge atmosphere by Dickens use of emotive language, as he does not say the only stock the shops had were lots of children he says heaps of children. He describes them as they were animals. Dickens also just describes the filth and squalor in London by saying The air was impregnated with filthy odours and he also writes, positively wallowing in filth, muddy and dirtier. Impregnated is a very strong adjective and fundamentally means saturated, so Dickens is actually saying that the air is saturated with filth, and this very effectively makes you almost feel sick. Dickens also says wallowing which means to roll in filth but Dickens then almost qualifies wallowing by saying positively wallowing. Dickens really brings the chase scene to life and makes it truly memorable but he accomplishes this in many ways. After Oliver starts running and the chase really begins Dickens builds up the tension and makes everything extremely busy by one long sentence. Stop thief! Stop thief! There is a magic in the sound. The tradesman leaves his counter, and the car-man his waggon; the butcher throws down his tray; the baker his basket; the milkman his pail; the errand-boy his parcels; the school-boy his marbles; the paviour his pickaxe; the child his battledore. Away they run. This sentence rally gets your heart pumping, and it doesnt give you a chance to breath, but you have to read on because its so exciting. After this sentence he carries on for the rest of the chase with this sentence structure; long sentences which dont give you a chance to breath. When Oliver is caught, Dickens makes the sentences short and snappy again which really adds to the affect. However when Oliver is brutally stopped stopped at last! A clever blow the tone and atmosphere changes. Now Oliver is down on the floor hurt we feel sympathy for Oliver as he is just a poor child even if he did steal something (although we know he didnt). However we feel even more sympathy for Oliver because not only has been wrongly accused but he was chased and betrayed by his only friends, the Artful Dodger and Master Bates. Something else that Dickens does in the chase is that he makes an extremely good use of description and adjectives. Dickens describes Oliver as One wretched breathless child, panting with exhaustion; terror in his looks; agony in his eyes; large drops of perspiration streaming down his face, strains every nerve to make head upon his pursuers. Dickens describes so many emotions in that one sentence and makes you feel so sympathetic for Oliver. He says that Oliver has terror in his looks. This is a very strong choice of word as it means intense fear but it really shows what is happening. All of this makes the chase even more memorable as Oliver has been chased, hit, betrayed, hurt and been left all alone but he didnt do anything. However this chase seen is another perfect melodramatic example as Dickens so cleverly exaggerates this scene. He describes it almost as if it were some kind of battle, as people would not literally chase after this tiny little boy like flocks of geese and begin to hit Oliver. This exaggeration of the chase builds up this enormous sentimentality for Oliver which readers would have loved in the 19th century. Oliver Twist is obviously one of the greatest novels written. Dickens manages to ensure that Olivers early adventures in London are truly memorable through a gripping fast moving storyline, the creation of the unique larger than life characters of Fagin, Artful Dodger and Mr Fang and the vivid critical descriptions of life in London. How they do this is not a mystery as at convergent plate margins its the rising of magma that creates volcanoes. Convergent plate margin consist or two plates oceanic and continental The topographic elements that are formed here are due to three occurrence, oceanic-oceanic plates colliding, continental oceanic plates and continental-continental plates colliding (Mueller, 2005, 140). When a continental and an oceanic plate meet a major topographic feature that will form is a volcano, this is an upward mountain that usually have an opening (vent) through which magma or gas flows. And yes plate tectonics concept explains this. The concept of plate tectonics is that the divided crust which is called plates move and due to the movement of a continental- oceanic plate subsection zones are created. The oceanic plate is denser than the continental plate as such it will sink (see figure 1) in to the stratosphere pressure will rise as well as gases and the mantle will melt it then forces its ay to the surface leaving a permanent mark or formation of a volcano. As rocks and magma are being forced up and this forms the mountainous landforms which is a topographic relief. Examples of this are Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Peel in Martinique. The last but not the least is the collision of a continental-continental plates, none of these plates sing as such constant movement causes them to collide or slide over each other in anyway the same land form is formed. It is here that the highest mountains in the world grow as at this collision solid rock is crumpled and faulted. Huge slivers of rock, many kilometers wide are thrust on top of one another like a fold, forming a towering mountain range. The pressure here is so great that an enormous piece of Asia is being wedged sideways; slipping out of the way like a watermelon seed squeezed between your fingers an excellent example of this is Himalayan Mountain Range in Asia. These topographic elements arent the only ones in existence as divergent plate margins also contributes to major topographic relief. Divergent plate boundaries are where two plates are moving apart from one another (Ritter, 2012)usually oceanic-oceanic . The topographic features that develop at this boundary are due to extension of the plate boundaries which causes rifting in continental and oceanic crusts Stealer, 201 1, 419). This extension is caused by rising convectional currents from the stratosphere, as they rise and approach the surface, convection currents diverge at the base of the lithosphere. The diverging currents exert a weak tension or pull on the solid plate above it. Tension and high heat flow weakens the floating, solid plate, causing it to break apart (see figure 2). The two sides of the now split plate then move away from each other, forming a divergent plate boundary. The space between these diverging plates is filled with molten rocks (magma) from below. Contact with seawater cools the gamma, which quickly solidifies, forming new oceanic lithosphere. The continuity of this process builds a chain of submarine volcanoes and rift valleys called a mid ocean ridge or an oceanic spreading ridge. Examples of this can be seen where the Eurasian plate and the North American plate are moving away from each other to form the mid Atlantic ridge located in the Atlantic Ocean near Iceland. In concluding topographic features on the earth surface are formed through the concept of plate tectonics which is the study Of the plates that makeup the lithosphere, their movements and how these movements has influenced hanged in the surfaces topography (Stealer, 2011 , 389). The movements of these plates form convergent plate boundary and divergent plate boundary and at each of these boundaries a different topographic relief id formed. At divergent the separation of oceanic plates forms oceanic ridges and at the convergent volcanoes, Fold Mountains, mountains and island arcs are formed. Features observed at these margins share some similarities but, also vary quite largely. These differences are caused by the different movements displayed at each boundary and the types of plates involved; oceanic or continental.

fossils essays Fossils are amazing how they are formed. The process is fossilization. I was surprised to discover that a series of mistakes must happen in order for a fossil to be created. First some living creatures must die and must some how escape the scavengers that have a roll in the food chain. The once living has to then become entombed in mud and sand. The shroud must lie undisturbed for years so that mineralization can take place in which the tissue or cast gets filled in with sediment. Then this body turns to stone. The scientists that study these relics are called paleontologist. Dates in paleontology are usually revised backward in time, since a new find may revise an event earlier then what was discovered previously. Examining articles for the first multi-cellular organisms, First vertebrates or the pollination of insects to flowering plants. The strata of rock in which they are found date the fossils. Measuring the extent of radioactive decay in certain isotopes they contain dates the rocks. The element carbon can exist in three different forms, Carbon 12 six protons and six neutrons, Carbon 13 six protons and seven neutrons. 12C and 13C are not radioactive. The rare 14C is radioactive, its atom decay by the loss of an electron to nitrogen 14. Theirs a half-life 14C is approximately 5,730 years, this is how long it takes for half the atoms in and quantity to decay. The earth gains 14C from cosmic radiation and losses it as a result of radioactive decay. Volcanic ash can be used for dating.
